Fine-tuning is the process of further training a pretrained AI model on a narrower, specialized dataset so it performs better on a particular task or domain. Rather than building a model from scratch, fine-tuning adapts an existing one, adjusting its behavior using additional examples.

For brands, fine-tuning is worth understanding mainly so it is not confused with the levers you actually control. You cannot fine-tune ChatGPT or Gemini to favor your brand. What influences whether those public models surface you is your presence in their training data and what they retrieve live, which is shaped by web-wide brand presence and crawlable, well-structured content, not by any private model training.
